7 steps to migrate a live WordPress website to your Localhost

1. Install a new version of WordPress on your localhost

Download a latest version of WordPress here. Run it n your localhost server. It will show WordPress default Hello World page on your local server.

2. Download WP-Content folder from your live website server

Now download WordPress content folder from your live website server. Log in to your cPanel and go to the Files section. Open File Manager and look for wp-content folder. Download it as a compressed zip folder. It will take some time if your live website has a lot of data. Extract all the files when download is complete. Replace the existing wp-content folder on your local WordPress server with the one you just downloaded.

3. Download database from WordPress

Go to your cPanel home page again and find phpMyAdmin in Databases section. Open it and you will see all the database files here. Go to the top menu bar and select export. Check “custom-display all possible options” as export method. Doing this, will pop-up some options. Scroll down and look for compression option. Select ‘zipped’ as compression option from the drop-down box on right. Click on ‘Go’ button.

4. Replace content of your WordPress folder 

Log in to your localhost phpMyAdmin. Select WordPress database and delete all files. You can do it by clicking ‘check all’ at the bottom and then selecting ‘drop’ from the drop-down box. Go to the top menu bar and select Import. Import the files that you downloaded from the cPanel of your live server.

5. Edit SQL Query

Go to the top menu bar of your database again and select ‘SQL’. It will show up a sand box where you write the following code. Replace ‘http://example.com’ with your live server domain name. Click on Go button at bottom.

UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = replace(option_value, 'http://example.com ', 'http://localhost');

UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace(post_content, 'http://example.com ', 'http://localhost');

UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, 'http://example.com ','http://localhost');

UPDATE wp_links SET link_url = replace(link_url, 'http://example.com ', 'http://localhost');

6. Authenticate your localhost with WordPress username and password

Open your localhost on a browser. It will show you some blank page. To fix this you need to login your localhost WordPress. Open http://localhost/wp-login.php on your browser. Use live WordPress username and password to log in.

7. Run your localhost WordPress site

Go to settings in WordPress dashboard and select permalinks. You can see that now links have changed and redirecting to localhost. Click the button ‘save changes’. Go to the top left and visit your site by clicking ‘visit site’ button. That’s it.

Add a Theme to your Blog :  A pre-built theme Highwind is used for this Blog .

Customize your selected theme : Different options are available to give your blog a new look. You can use your logo to improve your online presence. I have added a profile picture on the header area rather than using only blog title. 

Experiment with  layout and styles : Some WordPress themes have layout options. As for my theme my posts are on the left side and sidebar on right. I have replaced the default background color with my selected background color. For my posts I have added different colors to Headings.

Upload images that suits your blog content : It’s good idea to add featured images that are relevant to your posts. The picture above has been used as the featured image.

Add widgets to make your blog attractive : For my blog I have used two widgets which allow users to view blog statics and visits to the page.

How to reach there?

Burnaby Mountain Park is a part of Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, at the top of Burnaby Mountain. It is on centennial way, at 7 minute driving distance from Hasting Street, Burnaby. If you are using public transit you can easily reach to Burnaby Mountain Park from SFU transportation center. It will take 17 minute walk from SFU transportation center.

So come to Burnaby Mountain and have big fun this winter!
